 CASE STUDY:
Female Focus on Financial Inclusion in Zambia

OVERVIEW

The 2018 the first-of-its-kind Accelerator was a groundbreaking step forward in Zambia’s countrywide effort toward financial inclusion.

One week. 17 Zambian C-level bankers from 6 banks and the Bank of Zambia. 3 development financial institutions: FMO, Arise, and Norfund. 6 local entrepreneurs. 3 FWX dialogue makers. The Minister of Finance. And all their allies.

The entrepreneurs left with a powerful network of allies, and the bankers obtained invaluable insights on how to create real solutions for systemic change. But our work did not end here. In 2019, FutureWomenX facilitated a follow-up Master Class for FutureMakers for Alumni participants to build their next level capacity, and we are now working to roll out our program nationally across the entire banking sector in 2020.

OUTCOMES

  • FMO and the Bank of Zambia are now aligned in a new effort to explore dedicated credit risk guarantee structures, which will significantly improve access for women entrepreneurs.

  • The Bank of Zambia is pursuing the collection of sex-disaggregated data from the financial sector, a huge step toward understanding the scope of problem.

  • Women entrepreneurs now have a direct pathway of financial and non-financial support from local banks.
